Shiny New

ReformatNow that spring has arrived I’ve been busy with the traditional spring cleanup. The basement is a mess. It’s amazing how much junk collects over the course of the winter without you even realizing. The same can be said for the backyard although it is not nearly as bad. So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to clean up my WordPress install.

As I examined my database last night I couldn’t believe the amount of junk that had accumulated over the last couple of years - mostly orphaned entries in the wp_options table from plugins long ago abandoned. Rather than spending all night manually cleaning it out I decided to simply delete the entire thing and start from scratch. Handy thing that XML import/export feature is. The whole procedure took less than half hour including deleting database, creating new database, assigning new user, importing the XML file that I exported prior to embarking on this mission and re-uploading my theme and plugins. Not bad. I’m currently in the process of re-inserting images into various posts, images I failed to create a backup of but that’s not a big deal. It’s amazing how fast the backend runs on a brand spanking new install.

Ah, I love that new WordPress smell.
