Complaints About Speed Unfounded
Quite a controversy has erupted here in Manitoba over the provincial government’s plan to increase the speed limit on some highways from 100km/h to 110km/h. We have some groups spewing doom and gloom warning us of the carnage to come. We have the Manitoba Trucking Association complaining of the increased fuel costs that are sure to come.
People, in case you didn’t know, the posted speed limit is the maximum and not the minimum. The sign lets you know the maximum speed you may travel at under ideal conditions. This is a non-issue. Besides, on some highways like #1 everyone is already traveling at 110km/h or faster.

Welcome to the 20th Century Manitoba. You’re only 1 century behind the rest of the country now.

If some people had their way we’d still be traveling about in horse-drawn carriages.

I drive 150km west of Winnipeg and back on Trans-Canada Hwy. almost weekly, at a nice easy 100 km/h or so with everyone else passing me, me rarely having to pass anyone or change lanes for any reason: it’s about as stress-free as I can make it. As the sign says, Slower Traffic Keep Right, and I do. A higher speed limit (as noted, it’s a maximum, not a minimum) is not going to make me drive any faster.

My point precisely CMP.

The only issue I have is those who go say more then ten below the limit and don’t “keep right” as it says on every highway in Alberta….those people are a hazard to all those around them……and yes you can be ticketed for driving too slow.

Keeping right when traveling slower than everyone else shouldn’t even have to be posted. It should be common sense but it seems that is in short supply in some circles.
