Vanishing Dashboard

A couple of weeks ago I noticed strange traffic to my plugin folder in my server logs. Now it could simply be someone curious as to what plugins I’m running or it could be something more sinister. Not wanting to take any chances I dropped an empty index.php file in that folder. I did the same for the theme and wp-content folders. However, in doing so I unwittingly created a new problem. I thought I would share the problem and the fix in case anyone else out there has experienced the same thing.
After placing the index.php file in wp-contents/plugins I noticed my Dashboard was borked. The entire admin area functioned normally but the Dashboard area itself, where the incoming links and Planet WordPress feeds reside, was completely blank. Also, when navigating to the Dashboard, the URL changed from,
riteturnonly.com/wp-admin/index.php to
riteturnonly.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=index.php
How did I fix this? Change the empty index file you placed in the plugin directory from .php to .html as such - index.html. The html file provides the same functionality but won’t bork the Dashboard.

You’ve been having a lot of problems with your blog for months. Have you considered using Typepad (my favourite blogging platform)?

Not so much the blog as my pc. The HD died not long ago now my 1-yr-old 19″ flat screen monitor bit the dust. I’ve resorted to using my ‘ole backup which is a crappy 14″ CRT. It does the job.
With respect to WP I’d never leave. I’ve been blogging for nearly 10 years and have tried ‘em all. WP is my personal favourite.
