Canadian Inquisition

Filed Under: Canada

So, after all this time — four years since it became public knowledge that he took cash payments from Karlheinz Schreiber, fourteen years after the actual event — Brian Mulroney finally comes forward to explain… and explains nothing. Or rather, digs himself deeper. Those who might have been inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt until now will have a harder time of it after the preposterous story he told the ethics committee today.

Quick, who penned the above? Liblogs? Blogging Dippers? Wrong on both counts. Believe it or not it was Andrew Coyne. As someone who is normally pretty level headed this took me by surprise. In fact, it was that entry that spurred me into writing this one as up until now I had intentionally avoided the subject of Mulroney/Schreiber.

How did the former PM dig himself deeper? By admitting he accepted payment as per the terms of their business arrangement? By admitting he made a mistake by becoming involved with Schreiber in the first place? No laws were broken.

I have to agree with The Spade on this one. How does a private business deal between these two people justify a public inquiry at a cost of who knows how many millions? Those behind this fiasco in Ottawa should be ashamed.

  1. There are only two explanations for this:

    (a) Andrew has had a hate-on for Mulroney all those years and is now taking the opportunity to reach for the former PM’s jugular;

    or

    (b) Andrew really is toying with the idea of becoming yet another Liberal hack in the mainstream media.

  2. I was never a fan of Mulroney. In fact he is the reason I left the PCs for Reform but this inquiry is completely unjustified. I’m afraid I must respectfully disagree with Andrew on this one.

  3. Off the post topic, Len, but I prob won’t get another chance to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

    Best always,
    Dave

  4. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family David!!
