Happy Birthday

First of all my apologies for the lack of reading material lately but work has all but consumed me this last month or so. After being up on a roof for 10 or 12 hours/day one doesn’t feel much like writing about politics when the day is done.
Secondly, a great big happy birthday to this great country of ours! The true north strong and free indeed.
And finally, what shape would our nation be in were it not for the brave men and women of the Canadian Forces who selflessly put their lives on the line day after day. As we celebrate Canada’s 140th let us not forget those who are currently overseas - be it on peacekeeping missions or active combat in Afghanistan. I think this column by Lorrie Goldstein says it best. Here is a snippet,
Thank you for choosing to serve Canada, whether you were born here or came here from another country.
Thank you for deciding that Canada is worth defending, both at home and abroad.
Thank you for being ready to sacrifice everything, not just a safe, comfortable life here at home with your loved ones, but your very lives, if necessary, to protect us and those who are in need of our protection abroad.
And so on this Canada Day, on our nation’s 140th birthday, we remember them, because they represent what Canada is all about at its very best.
Strong, free, honourable, compassionate — and dedicated to the service of others.
