Way to Go Steelers
I should have posted this much sooner but alas I suffered a seriously sprained ankle last Sunday and haven’t been moving around too much since. In fact I missed an entire week of work. Anyway, congratulations to the Selkirk Steelers for winning the Anavet Cup in dramatic style! The Anavet Cup is played between the champions of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and their Saskatchewan cousins.
The Steelers, who finished the season with an awesome 49-9-4-1 record and ranked 3rd in the nation, should have easily dispatched the unranked champions from Saskatchewan but the Humboldt Broncos proved to be no pushover taking the Steelers to the 4th overtime period of Game 7 at the Rec Center in Selkirk. At 8:26 of the seventh period, 5 1/2 hours after the game began, Jason Frykas dug the puck out of the corner and hit Evan Walsh with a perfect pass at the top of the crease who buried it in the net to the delight of the capacity crowd.
The last time a Steeler team won the Anavet Cup was in 1975. The Steelers now move on to Prince George BC to do battle for the Royal Bank Cup - a five team round robin tournament to determine Canadian junior A hockey supremacy. Go get ‘em boys!
NHL? Who needs them? This is real hockey!

I agree, Len….GO STEELERS! After all, they are representing Manitoba now, not just Selkirk.

Hi Conrad,
I lived in Selkirk for a very long time and as such became a huge Steeler fan. But you are right, they now represent all of Manitoba.
In any event I really enjoy junior hockey. It may not be as polished as the pro-version but it is extremely entertaining. These kids have a lot of desire and character.
