Comedy Central Caves

Much has been written about Comedy Central’s decision to not allow South Park to include an image of Mohammed in one of their episodes. Not only is the blogosphere abuzz but the MSM has also taken an interest.
For those who have never seen the show it is an animated half hour program centered around a group of young children in South Park, Colorado. The show is famous for its biting satirical commentary on today’s issues. Yes it’s vulgar. Yes it can be gross. It’s supposed to be. That’s part of its charm. To be honest, I think the show is brilliantly written.
South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have never considered any topic taboo much like Monty Python’s Flying Circus of the 70s. They believe in using humour as a tool. Nothing is so sacred it can’t be parodied. What is so odd about Comedy Central’s position is that prior to making this decision they agreed with Stone and Parker. During a recent episode the Virgin Mary was portrayed in a less than flattering light which prompted outrage from some Catholics. At that time the network defiantly stated,
“As satirists, we believe that it is our First Amendment right to poke fun at any and all people, groups, organizations and religions and we will continue to defend that right.”
So what happened? Do they mean they will continue to defend that right except when it pertains to the criminal element of Islam. You know, that group of marauding self-righteous idiots who have nothing better to do than kill and destroy property.
To further illustrate the hypocrisy of Comedy Central they allowed South Park to include images of Christ defecating on both the U.S flag and President Bush - during this weeks Easter celebrations no less. Talk about selective rights defending.
A good argument can be made for the camp that says we should just let this all die already. Why keep stirring the pot? It’s over. However as I previously stated South Park is a commentary on the hot issues of today. And that includes the Mohammed fiasco. Besides, this is not the first time Mohammed has been portrayed in the show. It wasn’t a problem before. Images of Mohammed have been used in art and literature for centuries with no problem despite what the lunatic fringe of Islam says to the contrary.
I’m afraid I must add my voice to those who say Comedy Central is taking a cowardly stance.

And I agree with you, Len. Comedy Central IS taking a cowardly stance and are being hypocritical. (Probably because Christians won’t come after the producers of the show with axes with which to chop off their heads…)

I guess they didn’t want any one burning down their own countries becasue of a cartoon. Sad that so many people can be offended by somethign that means nothign in the long run.

Hopefully they’ll produce a Jesus vs. Mohummed boxing match and Jesus will kick his ass. Stone and Parker will need round-the-clock security for the rest of their lives, but it will be worth it.

Sorry for not responding sooner guys.
Kariba,
You are so right. It’s amazing how much influence the criminal element wields.
Vulture6,
I hear ya. Ultimately this entire thing is so silly. But as I said the lunatic fringe of Islam doesn’t know what it’s talking about when it whines about images of Mohammed being publicly displayed. It’s been going on for centuries with nary a peep. Hypocrites.
Raging Ranter,
Hahaha! I’d buy tickets to see that!

I believe we should always respect to each other religions and I do believe no matter what is your religion, they teach you how to become a good person but as always there’s a devil in ourselves.
I’m inherited the religion from generation to generation and sometimes I do wonder does god exist?

Couldn’t agree more Ismail. But at the same time people shouldn’t take themselves so seriously. Humour and parody is just that - humour and parody.
