Remember back in December when Paul Martin, speaking at a climate change conference in Montreal, accused the U.S of lacking a global conscience? Remember how he then claimed Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Frank McKenna, had been reprimanded by the Whitehouse? Remember how Martin then stood in front of reporters defiantly stating he will not be dictated to by the Americans? This was the focal point of his re-election bid. Captain Canada aka Paul Martin vs the Big Bad USofA. Of course we all know how it turned out, how it blew up in his face. While many of us suspected the entire thing was orchestrated by a Liberal party desperately clinging to life there was no proof - that is until now.
After being “muzzled” for months as Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Frank McKenna criticized former prime minister Paul Martin’s office Wednesday for stoking anti-U.S. sentiment during the recent federal election campaign.McKenna, speaking to reporters on his last day as Canada’s envoy, called the behaviour “sanctimonious” and said it backfired on Liberals in the Jan. 23 election.
Moreover, the ambassador said, the White House was justifiably angry over politically motivated leaks from Martin’s office about private discussions between the prime minister and U.S. President George W. Bush.
Kudos to McKenna for speaking out.
