Benchmarks

5 January 2006 under Canadian Affairs

Isn’t it amazing the way the Liberals keep talking about health care benchmarks as if they are something to be proud of? I don’t know how many times I’ve heard the issue raised since the start of the campaign the most recent being the other day during an episode of CBC’s Politics. Don Newman was speaking with Steven Fletcher of the CPC, Carolyn Bennett of the Liberals and I don’t recall the name of the NDP rep. Bennett’s continued reference to benchmarks left me with my head shaking.

After 12 years in power all the Liberals can do is talk about benchmarks? After 3 budgets plus Goodale’s mini-budget last year all the Liberals can do is talk about benchmarks? Paul Martin talks about his party’s record in the latest Grit TV ad. That record doesn’t look so great from where I’m sitting.

Was speaking to a liberal the other day. She was going on and on about how thankful she is that she is in Canada and not the US. Her knees are shot and, of course, she can get them fixed for free here. In the US, she would have to pay for it herself.
Get this. She was 18 months getting in to see a specialist. She has been given a surgery date of February, 2007!! She says she could go to a private clinic here tomorrow and get them done for under $2,000 each. In the meantime, she has been told to exercise and lose weight.(can’t walk!) They may not do the surgery in 2007 if she can’t drop 50 lbs.(can’t walk!) Thank God and the Liberals for our ‘free’ healthcare!!

This is exactly what I’m talking about. The waiting times for various procedures are outrageous and the Liberals talk about benchmarks!
