Issues vs Points

How can you tell we’re in the middle of an election campaign? Paul Martin continues to play Captain Canada fighting the threat posed by the imaginary enemy, the US of A, at every turn. First he criticized the Americans for failing to sign onto Kyoto, despite the fact our own record is far worse, now he’s blaming the US for the recent surge in gun violence plaguing Toronto as noted by our friends at MrsSatan.
The fact is, as I have previously mentioned on several occasions, this country already has very strict gun legislation on the books. Being a former collector myself I know of what I speak. For more info see the post Handgun Ban a Joke… from a couple of weeks ago. The current legislation does nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and neither will Martin’s new handgun ban. Rather than penalizing law abiding citizens the Prime Minister might actually try a new novel approach - get tough on criminals.
There are countless places right here in Winnipeg where I can purchase illegal firearms if I so choose. A ban will not change that. Criminals will not suddenly halt the practice of selling and buying “Saturday night specials” simply because Paul Martin has banned them. If anything the ban will have an adverse effect as the market is driven further underground. This will only exponentially increase the cool factor of these weapons in the eyes of the gang bangers. The only effect the ban will have is to prevent me from legally purchasing one - it will not prevent a gang banger from illegally acquiring one.
It’s time for the Prime Minister to stop trying to score cheap political points on the campaign trail and time to start offering real policy initiatives. It’s time to address the real issues and not play games for the sake of an election. You’re looking very shallow these days sir, very one dimensional. That’s downright scary.

A surprising source agrees with you - the President of the B.C. Liberal Party.

What’s really funny is to see his reaction AFTER B.C. residents responded to his first post:
