A Good Book Indeed

Officials at the University of Manitoba had long suspected a copy of the King James Bible in their possession was a first edition but could never prove it - that is until now.

Scholars at the University of Manitoba received a priceless pre-Christmas present recently, when a tome in their collection turned out to be a first edition of the King James Bible. The Bible was part of a collection of books donated to the St. John’s College in 1897 by Rev. Daniel Greatorex, who wanted to ensure religious history continued to be taught through the years.

Enter Canadian Mennonite University English student Jason Peters, who assessed the Bible as part of a final year practicum. Peters compared the book to Norton’s list, and quickly realized the specimen was an original.

Printed in 1611, first editions of the King James Bible have sold for as much as $400,000 at auction, although Sweeney said the university has no plans to part with theirs.

Now that its origins have been validated, not to mention its worth, I wonder if the public will still have access to it?
