A couple of points on the election:
- Stephen Harper doesn’t love Canada
- Stephen “Scary” Harper will rollback Charter rights
Where do these idiots get this stuff? First off, for Paul Martin to imply Harper doesn’t love Canada was just plain stupid. I thought he was going to fight a clean campaign? So much for that I guess. I thought he had more class than that. Instead of a simplistic “yes” answer, Harper went into detail saying,
“Well, I said Canada is a great country. You know, all of us who get involved in public life spend a lot of time away from our families to go across the country, probably get in many ways the most rewarding experience you could have, you know. It’s not tourist travel, you don’t see all the hot spots and all the great sights but you get a real sense - the kind old and the of traveling I’ve done, especially the last seven or eight months, you get a real sense of Canadians, where they live, who they are and what their challenges are. And I think the country has unlimited potential.”
How does one extrapolate that Harper doesn’t love Canada from that? For one to go into politics, regardless of ideology, one must have an inherent love of one’s country. Why else would one do it? I know many people have a deep mistrust of politicians but the reality is that political life is not an easy one. It’s a difficult and often thankless job. To suggest any politician, be it Conservative, Liberal, NDP or any other, doesn’t love his country is rhetoric to the nth degree. Not surprisingly, Conservative MP Jason Kenney has demanded an apology from Martin.
Then there is the ridiculous charge Harper will rollback Charter rights. For the boobs that have been twisting his words this is what Harper actually said,
“We will simply ask the House of Commons through a motion whether they want the government to table legislation on the marriage issue…”
End of story. If the House declines then the CPC will drop the issue. Remember, this issue was rammed through the house the first time. Many Liberal MPs even voted against it. And why shouldn’t Harper bring it up? The Grits would have eventually done so anyway in their attempts to roll out the Harper is scary nonsense. He laid it out front and center right at the start. With it out of the way he can now move on to more pressing issues. We can only hope the Liberals do the same.
