Yes Mr. Prime Minister, We Do Deserve Better
Filed Under: Canadian Affairs
It seems that PM Paul Martin is upset with comments made by Stephen Harper. In fact he is so upset he had a law firm fire off a letter to the Conservative leader warning him that the Liberals will defend themselves from smear tactics. And he has demanded an apology. So just what is Martin bent out of shape over? It seems that Harper linked the Liberal Party’s involvement in AdScam to organized crime. Did Harper go too far? Let’s take a look.
While any involvement by organized crime may not have been officially established, there certainly was an over-abundance of overtones during the Gomery Inquiry. Even Justice Gomery himself at one point during the inquiry described the behaviour of one witness as “money-laundering”. So what do we actually know?
- $200 million was improperly paid out to Liberal-friendly ad firms much of which was funneled back into Liberal party coffers
- Over $40 million remains unaccounted for to this day. In fact, the RCMP is currently investigating what happened to the cash, among other things
- Inappropriate meetings involving bags of cash, plain envelopes and money under the table
- Red herrings in the form of phony paper trails hiding the cash-funneling into Liberal coffers
Organized? Seems so to me. Criminal? I guess that depends upon how you define crime. Anyway, the PM has demanded an apology from Harper, a demand the CPC leader has rebuffed.
Actually, Paul Martin himself hit the proverbial nail on the head when he said,
“Canadians deserve better. They want to see a national debate.”
A debate? Hell, I want an election! And yes Mr.Prime Minister we certainly do deserve better.
