Wow. What the hell was that? Although pale in comparison to Katrina we had a dandy of a storm blow through here last night which knocked power out for some 17 hours.

It started around 2am with howling winds and fierce rain the likes of which I’ve rarely seen. Power was knocked out at about 2:30am. There was no way I could go back to sleep as I didn’t want to risk sleeping in so I stayed up. There’s not a heck of a lot to do at 3am sitting in the darkness let me tell you. Power was restored at about 6am - this lasted approx 45 minutes and it was out again. It wasn’t fully and permanently restored until about 7pm tonight.

I took a little drive this morning to see what was going on and I saw downed trees, branches and power lines/poles all over the place. I don’t think it was tornadoes although we have the perfect conditions for them - hot and humid in the summer. In fact, I’m surprised we don’t see them more often around here. I think it was just brute force straight line winds.

I’m certainly not going to compare what happened here to what the victims of Katrina went through - and are still going through - but during the 17 hours of no power I sure had a lot of time to reflect on the events of the past week. I don’t like some of the conclusions I came to.
