The World Answers the Call

Posted on | September 4, 2005 |

I wanted to bring something up that I haven’t seen very much of in the media so far and that is the list of nations that have stepped up to the plate. As noted in earlier posts, the US has always been one of the first, if not the first, to respond when tragedy strikes anywhere in the world. So naturally I was curious as to how many would now come to the aid of the Americans. I’m happy to report quite a few.

  • European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, speaking for 25 nations, said “Whatever they ask for, it will be given, from reserves of oil … to any other thing that they may need.”
  • My country Canada is busy preparing a relief package which includes military assets. Canada has also promised to boost oil exports to the US.
  • Germany offered medicine, water treatment and technology.
  • Australia has pledged $7.5 million US
  • France offered eight aircraft and two ships, 600 tents and 1,000 camp beds
  • The Netherlands offered to send a team of experts to New Orleans to assist in the rebuilding process. Their expertise in flood protection may prove to be invaluable
  • Venezuela offered money, fuel and various other forms of aid
  • Both Sweden and Switzerland have offered various forms of assistance. Denmark and Italy stand ready to act if called upon.
  • Japan as well as a large part of its private sector have offered huge amounts of money and supplies
  • Dirt poor Sri Lanka, still recovering from its own disaster gave $25,000 US
  • NATO stands ready to act
  • Even Cuba has offered aid

Of course this is merely a short list and there are many others stepping up. It’s a old cliche already but “every little bit does help.”
