Oh the Irony of it All

Posted on | August 30, 2005 |

I had promised myself that I wasn’t going to write anything more on the CBC lockout then I came across a couple of interesting items. According to a recent survey by Decima Research Canadians don’t seem especially affected by or interested in the labour disruption.

Most people didn’t notice the on-air disruption caused when 5,500 CBC workers were locked out of studios across Canada, a new poll indicates.

This is the network that we feed $1 billion to each year. This is the network that purports to speak for Canadians. Guess what? Canadians don’t care. And no the irony of it all isn’t lost on me. What’s equally humorous is the reaction of Arnold Amber, the CBC branch president of the Canadian Media Guild. He referred to the survey as “totally meaningless”. Why do I think that’s funny? Mr. Amber himself used to help put together polls for the CBC years ago. He added,

“They’re polling the entire population rather than the population that actually cares and listens (consistently) to the CBC.”"It is the equivalent of asking a bunch of people who only drive cars whether or not the bus service in their area is better or worse.”

He went on to say that thousands of people have sent emails urging a fair settlement. I’m not sure where all of these people are coming from suddenly. Last time I checked the People’s Network enjoyed a meager market share somewhere between 8-10%.

Then later on while browsing CBC Unplugged I read where their podcast feed is actually the second most popular in the country, at least according to iTunes. Not bad at all considering this is a private endeavour paid for exclusively by the employees (read no tax money involved). And no the irony of this also is not lost on me.
