Hit-and-Run

Posted on | August 26, 2005 |

Local news alert: 65-year-old Margaret Krupka had stopped to pick up a few items at a neighbourhood store including candy for her grandchildren. She never made it. She was the victim of a hit-and-run.

Witnesses told police Krupka was crossing Henderson westbound at Sutton and two southbound vehicles side-by-side in separate lanes had slowed down to let her cross. But a dark blue or black pickup, possibly a Sonoma, switched to the open curb lane and slammed into Krupka, witnesses said.

“He carried her on the hood for a bit,” recalled 34-year-old Craig Potts, who was driving a little behind the truck. “He hit the brake and she rolled off. She landed in the curb lane (near Springfield Road).”

Winnipeg police Sgt. Rob Riffel said: “It was quite an impact. It wasn’t a pretty scene.”

I can only surmise that the driver in question panicked and fled the scene in fear at what he had done. I also hope he does the right thing by turning himself in to authorities. Don’t wait for the police to catch up to you - and they will catch you - give yourself up willingly.

The vehicle is described as a mid-1990s to 2000 dark blue or black pickup, possibly a Sonoma, that “sits slightly higher than normal.” It also has some front-end damage.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the truck or driver is asked to call Winnipeg police at 986-6452 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

Update: A suspect has turned himself over to police. It’s not yet known if charges are pending as the investigation is ongoing.
