Orwell Would Be Proud

Speaking of disturbing court decisions (see last post) score another one for Canada’s ridiculous thought/speech laws.
Although I’m certainly no fan of David Ahenakew and do happen to be one of Israel’s biggest supporters, I’m shocked that he would be found guilty in a court of law for speaking his opinion. For those who have been hiding out in a cave, Ahenakew made some rather disgusting remarks in referring to the Jews as a “disease” among other things. Guilty of being a jackass? Hell yeah! Guilty of a crime? I don’t think he should have been. While I find his comments and overall attitude to be both rather alarming and repugnant, he has a right to his opinions and should have a right to express those same opinions. Whatever happened to free speech? Are we now condemning people for expressing an opinion that we find distasteful? This is a dangerous road we are traveling when the state can dictate and control such things. Ahenakew made a complete and total ass of himself but it is his right to do so. Anyone with half a brain can see what kind of a jerk he presented himself as especially when he attempted to blame his conviction on the fact he is aboriginal.
His conviction has nothing to do with race as he feebly claims. But it does have everything to do with this country’s Orwellian speech laws.
