Fertilizer Request Raises Suspicion

An unusual request has raised some red flags.

CALGARY - Local fertilizer suppliers are on guard after reports of a suspicious bid to buy a large amount of potentially explosive ammonium nitrate from a Calgary company. Mounties and U.S. authorities are investigating the report after a local company raised a red flag over a request to purchase 500 to 1,000 tonnes of the fertilizer, the same substance used to bomb the Oklahoma City federal building.

U.S. officials said a man using a Middle Eastern name and possibly bogus construction credentials, attempted to make the purchase.

According to company officials, a request of this nature at this time of year is highly suspect. They also explain that the industry is a rather tightly-knit group.

“We know who our customers are and what business they’re in.”

Makes you wonder.
