UN Backs Down on “Stingy” Charge
Hmmmm. Once again the UN finds itself at the center of controversy. Remember that shockingly stupid remark by U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland when he backhandedly charged the US with being stingy? In case you forgot, he said,
“If actually the foreign assistance of many countries now is 0.1 or 0.2 percent of their gross national income, I think that is stingy really. I don’t think that is very generous.”
Since causing the poopoo to hit the fan, Egeland now claims he was misinterpreted.
“I’ve been misinterpreted when I yesterday said that I believed that rich countries in general can be more generous.”
Of course you were. It’s interesting you would issue such a clarification following Colin Powell’s retort that the US “is not stingy.” In fact, Powell said,
“…[the US] is the greatest contributor to international relief efforts in the world.”
So tell us Egeland how you were misinterpreted? Seems fairly straightforward to us - you shot your mouth off without thinking about it first and it came back to bite you in the ass. Typical UN crap.
