Palestinian-Canadian Goes to the Big House

Posted on | November 25, 2004 |

And yet another middle eastern-born Canadian citizen is found guilty of terrorist related activities. Born in Gaza, Jamal Akkal 24, left the Nusseirat refugee camp for Canada in 1999, settling down in Windsor ONT. He travelled back to Gaza and was subsequently arrested on Nov. 1, 2003, and charged by the military with conspiracy to commit manslaughter. As a result of a plea bargain, he was sentenced to 4 years in prison.

The IDF contends that while in Gaza, he met with members of the terrorist group Hamas who provided him with weapons training in addition to taking part in the planning stages of attacks. Additionally, according to prosecutors, he was to purchase an M-16 rifle in Detroit plus explosive materials to be used in attacks on Jews living in North American cities and Israeli officials travelling within the US.

His lawyer maintains he is innocent saying he was arrested after firing several rounds in the air. Not to be outdone, Sheik Abdullah Hammoud, Imam at al-Hijra mosque in Windsor, said that Akkal worked at a convenience store and attended the mosque daily.

Well that does it for me. If he worked at a convenience store in addition to his daily visits to the mosque he must be innocent. What a travesty of justice!
