OTTAWA — Chuck Guite, the bureaucrat who ran the federal sponsorship program, told his subordinates he had high-level political backing for his decisions, says a former colleague.Evelyn Marcoux testified at a public inquiry Thursday that Guite had a standard answer to any questions about why certain projects were being funded. “Mr. Guite would transmit final decisions (and) he told us they had been approved by the minister, or by Jean Pelletier,” Marcoux said.
She also said Guite told her - on her first day on the job - that he had access to a “slush fund” of extra cash beyond the $40 million allocated to the Public Works Department in fiscal 1998-99 for the sponsorship program.
This is getting better every day. This latest testimony is most damning for Guite as he has yet to face criminal charges in connection with his alledged role in all of this.
