Kerry Tries to Scare Elderly Voters

Posted on | October 19, 2004 |

Not content with scaring young people by claiming that Bush will re-introduce the draft if re-elected, now Kerry is trying to scare elderly voters.

Democrat John Kerry told voters in two states Sunday that President Bush has a “January surprise” that would reduce Social Security benefits up to 45%.Kerry’s new offensive is based on an article Sunday in The New York Times Magazine. In it, Bush is quoted as telling major donors at a lunch that in his second term, he would “come out strong after my swearing-in on fundamental tax reform, tort reform, privatizing of Social Security.” The piece was written by Ron Suskind, author of The Price of Loyalty, a critical look at the Bush administration.

Asked Sunday why Kerry was bringing up Social Security at the end of a close campaign that could hinge once again on Florida, with its huge elderly population, Kerry senior adviser Bob Shrum said, “It’s timed to the fact that we looked at The New York Times Sunday magazine yesterday.”

One supposes that desperate times call for desperate measures.
