Edwards; Does He Know What He Is Talking About?

Posted on | September 29, 2004 |

A little over a week ago I posted an item about a radio interview with Senator John Kerry that left host Don Imus flabbergasted. At the time, Imus, a self-described Kerry supporter, said “I asked him a number of questions about Iraq, and I can’t tell you what he said.” Well, the Democrats have struck again. It was now vice-presidential candidate John Edwards turn to cause confusion. During the interview, Imus put forth a question asking Edwards if he agreed with Senator Ted Kennedy that the US is now more vulnerable to a nuclear terrorist attack because of the policies of the Bush administration. The question elicited an interesting response. Consider the following excerpts of that interview, as provided by NewsMax:

IMUS: Senator Kennedy said the other day that the Bush administration’s obsession with Iraq has made this country more vulnerable to a nuclear attack by terrorists, which is pretty strong. Do you agree with that?EDWARDS: I do.

IMUS: Oh, you do?

EDWARDS: I do.

IMUS: How so?

EDWARDS: Well, because if you look - did you say by terrorists? Was that at the end of that sentence?

IMUS: Yes, sir.

EDWARDS: Umm - it certainly made us more vulnerable to the possibility of a nuclear attack.

Moments later, however, Edwards began backpedalling on his agreement with Sen. Kennedy, making the astonishing admission that he had no idea what Kennedy had said.

IMUS: The vice president implied … that if you’re elected, it would make a terrorist attack more likely. Is that what you’re saying now?EDWARDS: About who?

IMUS: President Bush and Vice President Cheney - that electing them would invite a terrorist nuclear attack?

EDWARDS: That’s not what I …

IMUS: Well, Senator Kennedy seemed to be saying …

EDWARDS: That’s not what I… that’s certainly not what I was saying. That’s why I asked you a minute ago, because I had not heard what Senator Kennedy said - the business about the terrorists being at the end. What I know is true is that Iran and North Korea have moved forward with their nuclear weapons program[s].

This president has basically ceded the responsibility for dealing with Iran to the Europeans and with the North Koreans to the Chinese - which is a huge mistake because they create such a threat to America that it creates a much more serious nuclear threat to America.

America has long faced the scourge of terrorism. Remember the fateful day of 04 November 1979? That’s the day Iranian radicals, urged on by Ayatollah Khomeini, stormed the US embassy taking approx 70 hostages. With the breakup of the Soviet Union into numerous smaller states, there is cause for concern with respect to the disposition of the arsenal once in the possession of the former Union. With the rise to prominence of the black market, it also begs the question how much, if any, of the weaponry, components or knowledge can now be had for the right price? But to suggest any of this is the fault of the Bush administration is asinine.

The point is terrorism has existed in one form or another since the dawn of time and it’s threat to the US and its allies is not a recent development.
