Good Luck Jack

In case anyone missed it Jack Layton today announced he has prostate cancer. Despite this terrible news he said he plans to stay on as NDP leader while undergoing treatment. Fortunately prostate cancer can be successfully treated if detected early enough. At a time like this I want to put petty partisan politics to the side and wish Mr. Layton a full and speedy recovery. With any luck he’ll be back in the House raising hell in no time.  Read More →

Heroes Recognized

A big tip of the hat to Winnipeg Free Press employee Harry Prymak. He was among a group of people in Ottawa on Thursday to receive bravery decorations from Governor General Michaelle Jean. Mr. Prymak was icefishing with a group of friends up in Lac du Bonnet three years ago when they heard the screams of a snowmobiler who had fallen through the ice. Despite not being a strong swimmer, he risked his life by sliding on his belly over to the hole in the ice where the victim was. As he pulled the man up from the water the ice broke and he too fell in. He continued to go after the drowning man until... continue reading

The Game of Politics

Unfortunately the game of politics in this country has devolved to the point where scoring a few cheap shots to make yourself look good at the expense of your rival has seemingly taken precedence over actually doing something constructive for the betterment of society. Case in point: Canada’s opposition parties. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has plans to address the B.C. Legislature the day before the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games. It’s expected PM Harper will congratulate everyone involved in putting on the Games and what better way to do it than in the provincial Legislature. The... continue reading

Living In the Stone Age

On my About page you’ll note the following line (if you actually cared enough to read that far) “I attended a private Catholic school for the first 9 years of my schooling life …” This was not a personal choice but rather something I had to do in accordance with the wishes of my parents. All in all I’d say it was a rewarding experience and a good choice considering the choice of alternate schools in my old neighbourhood. As I became older however, I turned my back on mainstream religion. Why? For precisely the reasons outlined in the following story. The new Equality... continue reading

Honesty Still Alive

When reading the headlines of the day it’s easy to become frustrated. Reports of terrorist attacks, war, assaults, muggings etc dominate the news on a daily basis. Just when it seems all hope is lost along comes a story that makes you step back and re-assess your outlook on things. Such is the case with the following story. Winnipeg resident Peter Vandenberg parked his car at the Wal-Mart on Regent Ave at about 5:00 p.m Saturday when he noticed something sticking out from the snow. He got out of his vehicle and retrieved the mysterious item only to discover it was a wallet containing …... continue reading

Immigration Crisis

I’ve always felt our immigration system is in a state of disarray and the following story only reaffirms that feeling. On July 5, 1984 Parminder Singh Saini and four accomplices hijacked an Air India flight 20 minutes after it departed Srinagar. Saini fired a handgun in the direction of a steward narrowly missing him. He then shot two or three times at the aircraft’s cockpit door with one of the rounds hitting the flight engineer in the back. He ordered the pilot to land in Pakistan and kept everybody hostage as he attempted to negotiate a list of demands over the next 20 hours. After... continue reading

When Does an Arrest Become Assault?

By now we’re all familiar with the incident in which Yao Wei Wu was beaten by Vancouver police. In case you missed it here is a brief rundown. At about 2 a.m. on Jan 21 of this year two police officers in plainclothes, responding to a domestic violence call, arrived at the Wu residence. According to Mr. Wu, when he answered the door the police officers dragged him outside and beat him. The incident was witnessed by both his wife and child. Mr. Wu, who speaks little English, suffered injuries to his knees, legs and back. Additionally, his eyes were swollen shut and he sustained fractures to... continue reading

  • Dr. Feelgood In the House?
    February 5, 2010 | 8:01 am

Motley Crue wasn’t the only performance taking place at the MTS Centre here in Winnipeg last Friday night. The topic of discussion round these parts hasn’t concentrated so much on the action on stage as it has on the action that took place in the stands.
It seems a couple of concertgoers, egged on by the [...]

  • SI Interviews Stephen Harper
    February 5, 2010 | 1:38 am

As the Winter Olympics draws near, Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated conducted an interview with PM Stephen Harper. Of course we all know that in addition to being a student of history and political science, PM Harper is also a huge hockey buff. One day he may even find the time to finish that book [...]

  • Shelter Me 36-Hour Outdoor Challenge
    February 5, 2010 | 12:59 am

Sean Goulet works with the Lighthouse Mission and he has come up with a unique way to bring attention to the plight of the homeless … he’s going to join them.
From February 4-6th Sean will be spending 36 hours living on the mean (and bitterly cold) streets of Winnipeg. He will also spend 2 nights [...]
